It’s October, so I’m sure you’ve noticed that everything has turned pink. Breast cancer is the most diagnosed cancer for women, only behind skin cancer. But the good news is that it’s also a highly treatable cancer, especially if it’s found early.

Why mammography is important

A mammogram is a digital x-ray picture of the breasts. Regular mammograms are the best tests doctors have to find breast cancer early, sometimes years before it can be felt as a lump.

Most hospitals use digital technology in mammography, so the exposure to radiation is minimal, with the benefits of identifying an early breast cancer far outweighing the risks of the x-ray.

How to get a mammogram scheduled

Setting up an appointment for a mammogram is very easy. Visit your doctor or advanced care practitioner and request a referral for a mammogram. If you have a preferred hospital where you want to have your mammogram done, be bold and ask for a referral to that hospital–be sure to check with your insurance provider to make sure they cover a mammogram at that hospital.

You should then get a call from the scheduling department at the facility you requested to set up your appointment. Mammogram appointments take about a half hour on average, so plan for that when setting your appointment time.
