Superior Care Begins With Superior Caregivers

As one of the premier birthing centers in southwest Wisconsin, we’re known for an unsurpassed level of quality care. Each staff member in our birthing unit is trained in neonatal resuscitation, and three of our nurses are instructors for the course. Our state-of-the-art facility is staffed with experienced doctors, obstetricians and a highly specialized nursing staff who provide labor, delivery, recovery, postpartum and nursing care. And together with our surgical staff, we can also care for more complex C-section deliveries.

Quality Measures

Quality Measures Elective Births through Q3 2019Scheduled Elective Deliveries Not Medically Necessary This measure looks at making sure UHH follows the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) standard of requiring 39 completed weeks gestation prior to ELECTIVE delivery, either vaginal or Cesarean section. Compared to spontaneous labor, elective inductions may result in more cesarean births and longer maternal lengths of stay.

There is also research that notes that elective induction doubles the cesarean delivery rate. Repeat elective cesarean births before 39 weeks gestation may also result in higher rates of adverse respiratory outcomes, mechanical ventilation, sepsis and hypoglycemia for the newborns. There may be rare situations in which an elective induction is medically necessary. UHH has been able to be at 0% in 7 of the last 8 quarters and is performing better than the Wisconsin average rate.

Cesarean Births

Quality Measures Elective BirthsThis measure illustrates how often women who have never delivered before deliver by Cesarean section (C-section). There are some situations in which delivery by C-section is the safest way to deliver for mom and/or baby. These decisions are made with great care, as C-section births are associated with higher incidences of complications, longer lengths of stay and have higher health care costs. UHH has maintained an average of 31.78% over the last eight quarters and is performing a bit above the average percentage for Wisconsin.
