Vicki Scheel Receives Rural Health Ambassador Award

[Dodgeville] May is a month that focuses on many healthcare observances, the perfect month to recognize an extraordinary person within our local healthcare industry. During National Hospital Week, Vicki Scheel received the Rural Health Ambassador Award. Scheel is the Director of Health Information and Quality Improvement at Upland Hills Health (UHH) in Dodgeville.  This award recognizes employees within Rural Wisconsin Health Cooperative (RWHC) member hospitals who have gone above the call of duty promoting their respective organizations and making significant contributions to rural healthcare.

Scheel’s nomination for this award spotlighted her role as an exceptional mentor.  Through the years Scheel has hired and mentored hundreds of employees, many of whom have moved on to opportunities inspired by her commitment to the Health Information Management (HIM) industry. She believes in providing a platform for staff to attend seminars, work group meetings, trainings and to serve on boards that impact health care networks and much more. Scheel has always encouraged her staff to continue to expand their knowledge and to become a driving force within health information management.

Vicki is generous with her time, talent and resources. She has been a volunteer and active member in the American Health Information Management Assoc. (AHIMA) for over 40 years. During this time health information management has changed from ‘record libraries’ to electronic medical records (EMR). In 2013, Vicki rose to the ‘Epic’ challenge of helping UHH transition from hybrid medical records to a complete electronic medical records. This accomplishment was no small task. Through the transition, Scheel remained a positive force, working through each challenge, and keeping the larger goal in sight. Vicki’s staff and co-workers say her greatest asset is her “can do” attitude.
